Although aerial photography and video is our most exciting service, we are also equipped to provide stunning photo and video work on the ground.  On the ground. we use a lot of the same gimbal technology that we do in the sky.  The best tool for the job is our Ronin MX.  We also use tripods, jibs, and monopods.

Aerial imagery is amazing but it’s only part of the puzzle to a truly successful video.  You want your video to capture the attention of the viewer and hold it for the duration of the “film”.  To best accomplish this, we use the dynamic combination of both ground and aerial shots with reasonably quick cuts set to engaging music.  Typically a video for social media or your homepage should be about 1-2 minutes, however we can make videos any length to meet a clients needs.  Let’s take a look at some of the tools we use on the ground to deliver a truly dynamic product.

    Tripods and Monopods

    NJ Tripod photography
Tripods are fantastic at creating smooth pans whether it’s a low to high shot or a left to right. The keys to a good tripod are solid legs that lock in place and a fluid head for smooth movements.

    Jib

    NJ Jib Service
Jibs are great for creating the perfect reveal shot. Coming up over something in the foreground to reveal the subject in all its’ glory.

    Gimbal Technology

    New Jersey Gimble Operator
Nothing works better for smooth shots on the move like the Ronin MX. Whether you’re looking to capture a good approach shot, reveal, or in some occasions a pan, this gimbal gets the job done. Osprey Perspectives is your go to New jersey Gimbal Operator.

        Coastal Monitoring with Drones

Here at Osprey we care about the environment and our beloved New Jersey coast line. We have seen from experience how erosion and beach replenishment can effect both the wildlife that lives along our beaches as well as the people enjoying the beaches New Jersey has to offer. Over the next year or longer, We are going to be monitoring the coast in different locations as a case study in order to better understand how the beach replenishment operations and coastal erosion has been effecting our coastal shores.

Recently, We had the opportunity to visit Ortley Beach. During our visit we sent up one of our drones to capture aerial images of the erosion that took place after the recent January 2017 Nor’Easter storm that washed much of the replenished sand away and back into the ocean, leaving behind cliffs of sand that prevent people from accessing the ocean.  Many people are upset with what had taken place and they are forced to have to climb down steep cliffs in order to access the waters edge. Some people believe that the replenishment is protecting the million dollar homes along the barrier islands and preventing another Hurricane Sandy repeat. This may be true to an extent, but unfortunately mother nature will always win this battle.

No matter how much money and sand is used in these replenishment projects, the sand is always going to be washed away and moved by the sea, whether its one storm like the January 2017 nor’easter or a large passing hurricane like Sandy. After the recent storm, many NJ coastal towns were effected, not only Ortley Beach but other towns all over the state as south as Wildwood to towns on Long beach Island and even further north up into Long Branch. All of these towns had replenishment projects done at the cost of millions of tax payer dollars.

Back in previous years we had photographed locations such as Deal NJ where many jetties including popular fishing spots were covered by the replenishment. These Jetties were homes to many species of fish , crabs and birds that use the jetties to survive. Unfortunately most of these popular fishing spots are now extinct and the people who used them will only have the memories of the great times and wildlife at these once special locations.

-These next few photos were taken before the Deal NJ beach replenishment project in 2014. This was the Marine Place Jetty. This Jetty which was a fantastic fishing spot and home to many species of wildlife, It has since been dismantled and is now buried under replenished sand , along with many other jetties that were once here, all of the wildlife that once lived there is now gone.

-Some more photos of the Marine Place Jetty in Deal NJ and the local fisherman enjoying what once had to offer.

-This photo was taken right after the beach replenishment project that took place in Brick Beach NJ. You can see the Bulkhead wall the Army Corps of Engineers constructed as a barrier to block the ocean . You can also see how they fortified the front of the bulkhead with sand . Unfortunately all the sand they had used to create that barrier has since been washed away. Now the residents are left with a large eye sore wall and can no longer access the ocean without using a ladder to climb down to the waters edge.

-These photos were taken after the recent 2017 January Nor’easter. You can clearly see the sheer cliffs that the public are forced to climb down in order to access the ocean . This is a clearly an issue for people who might be disabled or the elderly and can no longer access the ocean in these areas.

How to Choose the Right Drone for the Job

Today, There are many consumer drones on the market. In fact the most popular DJI drone model (The Phantom) Is available at your local Best Buy store all around the country. While the technology and innovation increases , Drones will be become even more prevalent and useful in the future. Since the FAA opened the sky to licensed drone flights in August after the implication of Part 107,  Many people are starting to realize the benefits that drones will have on the future .

Although the common DJI phantom is a great tool for some applications , there are also many other drones on the market , So how do you go about choosing the right drone?

          New Jersey Phantom Photographer
          NJ Drone Quadcopter Photographer

          Small Drones (Quad copters)

Drones that fall into this category would be considered drones like the DJI phantom. Usually a drone in this category has 4 propellors and could safely fly in light winds . These smaller drone are operated by one pilot and have some decent cameras built in on them, they have the ability to shoot video and take pictures. While that may be great for some people and many hobbyists, These smaller drones lack the true professional image quality that large specific cameras can provide and are limited on their applications.

          Benefits –

          Easy to fly

Can fly indoors in tight spaces

          Long flight times

          Easy to transport

          Cons –

          Cant fly in strong winds

          Lacks a true professional image

If one motor fails the drone will crash

Birds of prey don’t like small drones!

          New Jersey Hexacopter Photography

          Large drones (Hexa-Octo Heavy-lift Copters)

Drones in this category are designed for one major purpose, and that is to lift heavy objects. Usually these types of drones lift large DSLR or cinema cameras . The benefit of having more propellers increases the lift power of that drone. These larger drones also have the ability to land even with 1 or 2 malfunctioning motors or propellers, helping creating a safe environment. Larger drones are usually operated by a team of people and take experience to learn to operate , These types of drones are usually custom built for a multitude of specific applications.

           Benefits –

Flexible range of cameras to use

More dynamic shots with 2 operators

Can safely land with a damaged motor or propellor

          Professional level quality

Can be build for specific applications

           Cons-

          Need experience to fly

Flight times can vary depending on payload weight

          Harder to transport

          New Jersey Drone Pilot
Mike DeMarco has both a technical and artistic background. He is a experienced drone builder/pilot, camera operator and video editor. Mike was among one the first licensed UAV pilots in the State of New Jersey and was among one of the first drone operators in the world to be given access to fly at many Trump National Golf Clubs and at Six Flags Great Adventure. His technical skills allow him to build custom solutions to drone applications for our clients. His video edits have been featured on many professional pages including the Trump Organization.

Hopefully this helps you understand some of the differences between large and small drones.

Here at Osprey Perspectives we have a variety of drones that we offer for our clients and give them the ability to choose the right drone for their specific job. If you have any questions regarding drones or want to learn more please contact us !
